Find the distance from key to car | News, Sports, Jobs - Escanaba Daily Press

Dear Heloise: Claudine from Spokane, Washington, is partially correct about the car key fob communication being able to potentially drain your battery. However, the distance shouldn’t be determined by using the lock, unlock or remote-start features. Those functions have a much longer range.

I can unlock the doors or use the remote-start feature from any room inside my home and from quite a distance outside my home with the garage door closed. However, the communication to start the vehicle and drive is far shorter, usually 3 to 5 feet. Some cars can be slightly further. That communication is a far weaker signal and is easily blocked by doors and walls.

The easy way to test this distance is to have someone else in the car while you try to start it from various distances. That will give you the proper range to stop the constant communication. Hope this helps. — Bob, in Ohio

TIP FOR LIBRARY BOOKS

Dear Heloise: When I check out library books for my grandkids, I put a sticky note on the inside of the back cover. I let it stick out a little so that it’s easily seen. That way, it’s easier to find among their other books. — Margo Campbell, Walker, Alabama

LAUNDRY DRYING

Dear Heloise: Dryers can sometimes damage clothes. Heavy items, such as jeans, take a long time to dry and use up a lot of electricity. Unfortunately, our weather prohibits an outdoor clothesline. But I’ve found a solution:

I put clothes in the dryer for only 10 minutes to get the wrinkles out. Lightweight items, such as lingerie, can stay in the dryer, as they dry quickly. I then put clothes on closet hangers and hang them to air-dry on a closet bar that I’ve installed above my dryer. When they’re dry, they’re ready to hang in the closet. It saves time and energy. — Linda C., Huntington Beach, California

COLOR CODING PANTS

Dear Heloise: I have several nice slacks with stretch waistbands, but whenever I tried to find them in my closet, they are always mixed up with other slacks that had zippers, as well as some capri pants.

Then I bought colored tape, which I wrapped around the handle of the hanger, cut to about 3 inches long. This way, I group the colors together and know that red stands for the zippered slacks, green for the elastic waistband ones and yellow for the capri pants.

It saves a lot of time and aggravation. — A.R., in California

EASY DRINKING

Dear Heloise: Insert a straw in your coffee lid or beverage to drink it while driving, which will prevent spillage! — D.N., in Florida

Teen skateboarder dies after skull fractured by car in Linda Vista - NBC San Diego

An 18-year-old skateboarder who sustained severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Linda Vista on Tuesday has died, officials said.

The skateboarder, who was identified as Cameron Vaughan, suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed when he rode against a red light and was struck by two vehicles at 7:17 p.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego Police Department. He was not expected to survive.

Vaughan was riding eastbound in Osler Street on the south side of the Genesee Avenue intersection when a 45-year-old man driving a Chrysler Pacifica southbound on Genesee Avenue hit the skateboarder as he crossed the street, SDPD Officer John Buttle said.

Due to the force, the teenager was thrown into a Nissan Altima driven by a 25-year-old man that stopped at the red turn arrow in a northbound turn lane, Buttle said. The skateboarder came to rest south of the Nissan in the northbound lane.

His body is now at the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

"He came here every other day, was a really good kid. He skated a lot," Mason Spears, one of Vaughan's friends, told NBC 7 at the skatepark on Wednesday. "He was a great kid. I don’t know why it had to happen to him."

Spears said the Vaughan was an accomplished skateboarder and often picked up stunts on his first try.

"I was like, 'Wow.' I got butterflies in my stomach. There's no way that just happened. It was so sad," Spears said, describing his reaction to the news that his friend was fighting for his life after the crash.

The accident, having happened so close and involving a close friend, is having a chilling effect on Spears and other skaters. It’s a harsh reminder of the dangers beyond the skate park surface.

The two drivers involved in the collision remained at the scene. Neither were cited or faced charges in connection with this accident.

Traffic Division officers responded to the scene and were investigating the collision.

Three cars involved in ricochet crash at busy Kirksville intersection - ktvo.com

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — There were no injuries after three vehicles were involved in a ricochet wreck at the intersection of Highway 63 and Illinois Street in Kirksville on Friday.

The crash happened just after 6:20 p.m.

Authorities told KTVO that an SUV driven by Mark Butcher, 63, of Gilberts, Illinois, was heading east on Illinois Street and attempted to cross the intersection and struck a car heading northbound on Highway 63.

That car was driven by Baileigh Phillips, 19, of Memphis.

Due to the impact of that crash, Butcher's SUV then collided with a stationary car driven by Bohden Meshkowitz, 19, of Kirksville, that was facing west on Highway 11.

No one was injured in the crash.

On-duty Detroit paramedic accused of driving ambulance drunk, hitting cars

DETROIT, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - An EMS paramedic, under the influence of alcohol, was driving an ambulance when he side-swiped three parked vehicles, according to a press release from the city of Detroit

He was driving at Carpenter and Klinger in the city of Hamtramck on Dec. 1 around 1 a.m., when the crash happened.

At the time of the crash, a Priority 2 patient was in the back of the ambulance and was not injured, according to officials.

After the crash, the paramedic waited for Hamtramck police to arrive, according to the city.

Per protocol, the paramedic was taken to a clinic to be tested and it was determined he was under the influence of alcohol at the time, city officials said.

He was placed on unpaid leave pending further review, city officials said. The paramedic has been with the department for six years.

According to the city, the paramedic doesn't have any prior accidents or alcohol-related incidents.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy for the use of alcohol while on duty and will take the appropriate action," Commissioner Chuck Simms said. "We have an outstanding team of EMTs and paramedics at DFD and it's unfortunately that this incident detracts from the lifesaving work they do every day. We have programs and supportive services in place for our employees who may be struggling with issues such as alcohol dependency and we will redouble our efforts to make sure any employee who may need them are aware of how to access them."
